Got Boys? Get WD40 (WFMW)

Posted on September 18, 2007. Filed under: WFMW |

The emails that circle the internet really are true. WD40 is useful for more than just squeaky doors.

In the last week or so I’ve used it to clean crayon off of the chalkboard and off of the wall. And you know what? It just wiped right off.

And if you read the back of the label it says it’s good for cleaning off all kinds of gunk and grime and glue and goop. Sounds like everything a little boy could get get into. :)

One word of caution: WD40 is not non-toxic and it does leave a residue that needs to be cleaned off with soap and water so I would save it only for the worst messes and only on things I could wash with soap and water afterward.  (I was out of Magic Erasers, which by the way, are safe to use around children.)

So now ya know.

Great tip. I have some magic marker on a chalk board, I wonder if it will work on that?

WD40 will also get out crayon from clothes. I once washed a load of clothes and put them in the dryer only to find one of my darlings had a crayon in his pocket. Distressed that the entire load was ruined, My MIL and I did some research and found this solution. After using WD40 to remove the crayon we had to use dishwashing liquid I guess to remove the residue but the results were amazing. It was very labor intensive but we saved every single piece of clothing!

Crayon out of clothes? Really?? Awesome! That’s a good tip to know. We haven’t had the “crayon in the dryer” yet, but I’m sure it’s bound to happen eventually. :)

GREAT tip!! I love the magic erasers too. At our bug-themed b’day party, we did bug thumb prints. The ink from the stamp pads was not washable, but the magic eraser took it right off!

I used WD40 for crayons all the time when mine were little! It really does work.
Another thing it was good for…unsticking stroller wheels. If your baby’s stroller isn’t turning properly, just spritz the wheels with a little WD-40!

wonder if it would work on lipstick in clothes? anyone had a little girl “episode” and tried it??

That’s a good tip to know!

Jennifer

This is an awesome tip! Thanks so much for sharing!

Hi there, I’ve just started reading your journal after finding you from menu monday. I have enjoyed my visits. I LOVE WD 40 as well. I did however want to forward you to another website to Jessica at Kerflop, if you have never read her. Anyway, last year her son got serious chemical burns from the Magic Eraser, since then 3M has actually changed their packaging to include warning that they are no safe for children. Here is her story http://kerflop.com/2006/11/02/chemical-burn-original/

Just Beachy: Wow, thanks for that!

I even researched them a while back to see if they were safe enough to let my kids use them and I never found anything online that proved to be true.

Really makes you stop and think. I also feel really bad for Mrs. Kerflop that some people can’t cut her some slack and have to act like jerks. But I’m relieved that her son didn’t get any permanent scars out of the deal.

Thanks for sharing!
