It’s Almost Sad – Almost

Posted on October 21, 2007. Filed under: Family Fun |

We took the first two of our five kittens to their new home yesterday. It’s almost kinda sad….almost. :) Considering I didn’t plan on keeping any of them past 6 or 7 weeks and they’ll be eleven weeks tomorrow…I’m sure I can get over it. Okay, I’m over it.

Everything was right on track until the kittens were four weeks old and popped up with ringworm. Oh what joy when I found out that I needed to BATHE them (and the mom!) at least once a week and preferably twice a week! Fortunately, it wasn’t nearly as difficult as I imagined it to be. They didn’t like it, but they didn’t turn on me and I never got a single scratch. Unfortunately, I stopped the treatment too soon and it came back and then my kids popped up with it, too. After 7 weeks of dealing with this, bathing 6 cats weekly, treating my children twice a day for the last week or two… “ringworm” is almost like a bad word in this house. Yeah, I know, I’m probably way too nice and should have dumped them all off at a shelter a long time ago. But you know, we named them. And you’re not supposed to name them. But we did. And so Tasha, Uniqua, Pablo, Tyrone and Austin (Backyardigans fans anyone?) have been living at the Shelter de Proverbs31.

At last they are nearly rid of it so the friend who was expecting to adopt the two girls said that she’d go ahead and take them and finish their treatment on her own. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! Yesterday evening the kids and I loaded up Tasha and Uniqua and took them to their new home. They took to their new backyard immediately and when I left they were letting the two kids pick them up and carry them around. I have no doubt they’ll do just fine. :) And hey, since it’s a friend we’ll get to visit them on occasion. Of course, they’ll get new names, but that’s how adoption works. It’s not like we could tell them apart anyway – they’re completely identical.

So now there are three! And of course, we’ve gotten attached to one. Oh come on, you were expecting that, I know you were. :) The boys are identical as well, and almost identical to their sisters, but two of them have little crooks in their tails (born that way) so we can tell the boys apart by their tails. The one we call Pablo (crook at the end of his tail) has taken a special liking to us and us to him. We’ll probably end up keeping him. Austin (the straight tail) is spoken for as soon as he is ‘cleared’ and Tyrone (crook in the middle of his tail) hasn’t been claimed yet but I haven’t been trying because of the ringworm. Honestly, I could probably handle keeping him, too. He’s my second favorite. :)

I couldn’t take one last picture of them all together (sniff, sniff), but I’ve snapped a few pics along the way.

Yeah, there’s a good chance we’ll be keeping Pablo. :)

Oh, I feel your pain!! We adopted a kitten back at the end of June that had Ringworm. We didn’t find out until she had infected our whole home (two dogs, two other cats, two kids, and both adults). We have been going round and round with it ever since. It’s now almost 4 months later and the dogs and cats are finally clear, and the kids are clearing up but still have a couple of spots (my poor daughter got it on her head too) but the kitten is still infected. We have gone through two vets, dips, shampoos, paid over $900 in vet bills and another $1200 in over the counter meds, dr. bills and prescriptions for the kids, equipment (we had to buy large crates to quarentine the cats), etc. There is one oral medication we have been told would clear it up but our vets would never give it to us and we just found out today it will cost $250 for the pills, if we can get another vet to prescribe them for us, so I don’t know what we are going to do. We may have to give her up just to save the rest of us. It’s very sad.

Anyway, good luck with it, and I wish you luck with the kittens!! I’m hoping our kids will be over it in another couple of weeks and then if we can just get through the two years of waiting find out if we missed a spore we will be good. Take care!!

We got a free kitten 3 yrs ago and didn’t get her fixed in time. Around the time I had our third child she had 7 kittens. Thankfully, they never got ringworm but we were only able to find a home for one of them. I just couldn’t bring myself to take them to the local shelter because they would put them down if they didn’t find a home for them. My boys also named them…So now we still have 6 cats and they really do help keep mice and snakes away from the house. We won’t have any more though because we took them all in a little at a time.
