Tackle It Tuesday – Stocking Up
Lately I’ve been attempting to slowly build up an overstock supply of foods in our pantry and freezer by buying a few extra things during each shopping trip, especially when things are on sale. We’ve never had this before, I always buy food for each week and we never have any extra. The downside is that we can get caught in a pinch if Big Daddy gets sick and can’t work or the car breaks down or we can’t get to the store for some other reason.
I don’t like that.
So I’ve accrued a good amount of canned foods, pasta, rice and dried beans. Now I’m working on adding some other things. When I went shopping yesterday I bought a large amount of fresh fruits and vegetables. I’m worried we won’t use them all before they spoil, especially if we go to my mom’s, so I spent an hour last night washing and slicing most of them. I put them in ziploc baggies, put a few of them in the fridge and the rest of them in the freezer. Some of them are experimental – I’m not sure how well they’ll freeze. We’ll see how they turn out, and if it works well we’ll do it again in the future. I rather like knowing they’re there and already chopped or sliced and ready for use. I think I’ll do this every week.
I’ve got a picture, and I’ll put it up as soon as I can find my camera cable! Happy Tackling!

It’s a good feeling to know there are always some extras on hand. Hope the freezing works well for you!

I used to do all of my food prep (such as cutting veggies and fruit, and portioning meat) as soon as I came home from the grocery store so everything is ready to go later in the week but I’ve gotten out of that habit. I really need to get back into it… Makes things much easier.

That’s a great idea – it is amazing the meals you can put together with a few basic ingredients.

I keep meaning to try the same thing and clean, chop, and freeze those fresh vegetables. I have an uncanny knack for remembering to use a certain vegetable or fruit JUST after it has gone bad.

Vegetables will last an entire year in the freezer if you blanch them before freezing them.
