Dress Rehearsal Day - Some Stats

Just a quick post with some stats.

The Day of the Dress Rehearsal:

  • 2 Little girls
  • 2 Leotards, 2 Pair of Tights, 4 Tap Shoes, 4 Ballet Slippers
  • 2 Tutus, 1 Fringe Skirt, 4 Feathery Attachments
  • 7 Safety Pins
  • 2 baths
  • 3 ponytail holders, 2 bobby pins, 1 can of mousse, 1 can of hairspray, 1 brush, 1 comb
  • 30 minutes of French braiding
  • 1 hour of curling hair
  • 20 minutes of applying makeup
  • 3 total hours of prep time
  • 15 minutes of driving time, one way
  • 2 1/2 hours of rehearsal time
  • 1 hour of undressing, unbraiding, and getting ready for bed - 2 hours after normal bedtime
  • 1 very patient two year old little brother - PTL!
  • In case you’re wondering…

Princess’ hair is pulled into a high ponytail, and then pulled through in a small “upside down” loop, with the ends pointed up and curled into a cascade of tiny ringlets falling around the loop.

Drama Queen’s shorter hair is parted, french braided down the sides, pulled into a ponytail in the back, turned “inside out” with the tail sticking upward and curled into a mound of little ringlets.

    In case you’re also wondering…

Sure we could probably do something easier - but what’s the fun in that? Besides, I finally figured out how to do fancy hairdos!

Do You Think My Children Have Seen Too Much Miami Ink?

The little guy has a mustache and a kiss on his forehead, too.

Personally, I don’t have any tattoos, and I can’t imagine ever getting one. Yet, I do find them fascinating in a strange way.

Out of the Mouths of Babes…

    Drama Queen:

“Dear God…And help the dogs and the cats and the lions and the giraffes and the zebras feel better when they go to the vet.”

    (?)

To be fair the rest of the prayer very sincere and sweet and heartfelt. I guess I just never thought of praying for all the cats’ and dogs’ and lions’ and zebras’ and giraffes’ vet visits before. :)

All smirking aside, I have noticed a shift in her praying, that she’s praying more for others. Even if it does include lions and zebras and giraffes. Makes my heart melt.

Clearly I Need To Keep The Extinguisher Handy…

Earlier this week, my son, my cute, sweet, innocent little son, through no devious mischief but merely through curiosity and normal play, twice tried to become a teeny little arsonist - all in the same day.

It began that morning, when he was playing with Princess’ play guitar (which broke a string just the day before, but I didn’t even realize he had it) in the girls’ room and watching Blues Clues. I wasn’t paying much attention until he told me the tv wasn’t working in there. And neither were the lights. Or the clock for that matter. Say what?

After checking the box in my closet I confirmed that the switch for their room had been tripped, but turning it back to “ON” did not make the lights come back on as I expected it should. Say what??

After telling Big Daddy that I thought the fuse must need to be replaced because it wasn’t coming back on, he checked it and said that it sparked when he turned it back on - meaning something was wrong in their room. Like what? The only things plugged in are the lights, the tv, and the clock.

So back to their room I go. Checking the outlet for the tv I find the plug had shifted a little and the top wasn’t flush with the outlet cover - Leaving just enough room for the stray METAL string to lay neatly across both prongs of the plug between it and the wall!! SAY WHAT?!?

    1. My first thought was thank goodness it didn’t spark and catch the curtains or nearby sleeping bag on fire!
    2. Simultaneously, my second thought was to yank the string off immediately - good thing the breaker was off!! Which led me to my next thought:
    3. Thank goodness Little Prince wasn’t TOUCHING the guitar string when it contacted the outlet!

It took a few seconds for my heart to stop fluttering.

And if that wasn’t enough - later in the day Little Prince thought he’d test out our “new” (hand-me-down from MamaNut) microwave. … By cooking a floppy disk! Be still, my rapid pulse.

I was cooking at the stove when I heard the distinct *clink* of the microwave door followed by the recognizable *beep* of one of the preset cooking buttons. As I turned, the innocent microwave began cooking the Wal-Mart picture disk from Princess’ 3rd birthday.

Which of course began to spark.

    A lot.

Even though it only took me two steps over there and about two seconds to hit the stop button.

It’s a good thing I was standing right there. I don’t know exactly what would happen if you let a floppy disk continue to cook in the microwave and I don’t intend to find out. But I imagine it wouldn’t be good. Or pretty. I’m not sure if the microwave would survive. And all my brain can conjure is an image of a white little microwave spewing flames.

So how much trouble is he going to get into when he is TRYING?

    * Make no mistake I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my little boy dearly and I’m mostly thankful he was not harmed in any way. God kept him safe, I know it without a doubt.

    * Just in case you’re worrying, I do, in fact, have a fire extinguisher tucked in an out of the way but very easy to get to location in the kitchen.

*Just in case, I’m keeping all matches taped to the ceiling!

    * I jest. … For now.

At Which Point I Heave A Sigh of Relief

A very busy, crazy, fun-filled weeks draws to a close as the last hours of the day slip away into tomorrow. I’ve been extremely busy this week, mostly preparing for our early Thanksgiving Dinner we had yesterday and for Little Prince’s second birthday party that we had today. Yesterday morning, my house (kids rooms excluded) was nearly spotless. Almost everything was swept, vacuumed, mopped, dusted, shampooed, you name it. With the smell of coffee in the air and potatoes cooking in the crockpot, I was even (incredibly enough!) freshly showered and my kids were dressed with their teeth brushed when family began to arrive at my house. And I wasn’t stressed out either. And y’all, that’s nothing short of a miracle - all of it. God gave me an extra helping yesterday.

After a great time of visiting and eating with family, after spending last night baking and preparing for today’s party, after a very crazy morning, a very exciting party at a local venue, and returning home with Little Prince’s birthday gifts to play with all evening… my house now looks NOTHING like it did yesterday morning. Every single horizontal stacking surface in my kitchen, dining room and living room is completely covered. I think my house is buried under here somewhere. :) I completely cleaned up after Thanksgiving lunch yesterday and I’ve even put away a bunch of the party stuff, but you wouldn’t know it by looking around. Oh well,  right? But we sure are going to be busy tomorrow!

For now, I’m just going to heave a big sigh and catch my breath and leave it all where it is. It isn’t going anywhere.

    Mommy, What’s a Maid?

So as we’re watching a movie my seven year old asks what a maid is.

I tell her that a maid works for someone and cleans their house, might cook, maybe lay out their ironed clothes,… stuff like that.

She thinks for a moment and replies: “That sounds like what you do.”

So true, so true. But I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world. =)

Come Shoot The Breeze With Me…

    a-blog-breeze.jpg

Once again, a little moment to chat. Pour yourself a tall glass of southern iced tea, grab a rocking chair on the front porch and sit and shoot the breeze a while.

First off, a big congratulations to the winners of the Spring Organizational Challenge. Way to go!

Congrats to all those who completed their challenges!

Wow… there has been so much going on lately. Since finishing my bedroom challenge, I have started working on Read the rest of this entry »

    Can You Speak Baby?

Little Prince has really started talking a lot lately. The incoherent babbles and squawks are rearranging into semi-coherent words and phrases. If you count all the baby babble he’s been doing, he’s really quite the talker. It’s fun to hear the babble turning into genuine conversation. :)

Of course, the intent is there but the execution is still a little sloppy. In typical toddler fashion, the words come out a little distorted and squished. Though he can say “momma,” “puppy,” “buckle” and “go” clear as a bell, the others might take a little more guesswork without helpful context.

For grins & giggles, how many of these can you guess?? :D

    1.) bup

    2.) dieyee

    3.) hearse

    4.) orsiss

    5.) bopper

    6.) ink

7.) awnna (okay, that’s technically three words in one - hint, hint.)

    8.) key

    9.) ite

    10.) uck
